Beer makes hay while sun shines

With Delhi reeling under scorching heat, beer shops are out to make hay while the sun shines — more than 23 lakh beer cases have been sold in the past 69 days (from April 1 to June 8, 2012).

As per latest Delhi Government statistics, beer has emerged as the most preferred drink, closely followed by wine and other brands of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL). Delhi’s beer consumption increased to 23,38,488 cases (2,80,61,856 bottles) till June 8, 2012 as compared to 22,96,238 cases (2,75,54,856 bottles) last year during the same period,  touching a new high this summer. In other words, per day Delhi’s beer consumption has touched around 4,06,694 bottles this year.

On the other hand, 18,29,791 cases (2,19,57,492 bottles) of IMFL have been sold till June 8 this year as against 15,07,749 cases (1,80,92,988 bottles) of IMFL last year during the same period. Each case contains 12 bottles of beer. With the rise in mercury, a total of 2,80,61,856 bottles of beer were sold in the last 69 days. Of course, when it is summer time, the weather is just fine for chilled beer. But never ever it had come out as the flavour of the season so strongly.

“There is a significant growth in the beer segment compared to last year and the rising temperature has resulted in boost in sales of beer in the city. The sale is expected to be increased further in the next two month,” said a senior Excise Department official. Over 30 beer brands, in strong, light and canned segments, are available in the city. While the beer sales have doubled up in liquor vends, the scenario is no different in restaurants, pubs and hotels which are also witnessing brisk sale.

It may be noted that sale of beer has dropped drastically in June last year due to good rainfall and increase in prices. As per Delhi Government statistics, Delhi’s beer consumption was reduced to 8,07,282 cases in April, 15,34,622 cases in May and 10,35,364 cases in June in 2011-12 when the heat conditions were severe in the city.

The beer sell in 28 shopping malls across the city also witnessed rise of 120 per cent till date during the current financial year as compared to last year.

The revenue from excise also witnessed a growth of 23.04 per cent this year as compared to the last year. The total revenue collection has touched Rs 450.60 crore till June 8 in 2012-13 as compared to Rs 365.48 crore in 2011-12. Similarly, the total collection of revenue from luxury tax also increased from Rs 50.69 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 59.18 crore in 2012-13 during the same period.

There are about 460 liquor vends including departmental stores and Government-owned outlets besides 360 restaurants in the city which beer guzzlers frequent to quench their thrust. “June is always the peak period for beer market and July onwards sales will start to dip though the demand will be there till September,” said an official of Finance department.

A staggering 11.78 crore bottles of beer were sold in the national Capital in 2009-10, while a total of 9.56 crore bottles of IMFL were sold during the same period. In 2008-09, the people of the city had consumed 9.74 crore bottles of beer while a total of 8.39 crore bottles of IMFL were sold during the period. In 2007-08, 8.4 crore bottles of beer and 8.3 crore bottles of IMFL were consumed in the city.

The excise department has fixed Rs 3,000 crore revenue from sale of liquor and beer in 2012-13. In 2011-12, the excise department had collected revenue of Rs 2400 crore. The Government had collected revenue of Rs 1,630 crore from liquor in 2009-10 as against Rs 1,420 crore in 2008-09. The official said the collection of revenue has registered impressive growth as the department has initiated serious efforts to streamline the tax collection mechanism.
