Shops And Establishments Rules

1. Ordinary rates of wages per hour shall be calculated by dividing the total wages payable to a person by the number of hours in the wage period.

2. No deductions for breach of contract shall be made from the wages of a person unless

* There is a written term of contract requiring the employee to give a notice of termination of
such employment and
* The period of notice does not exceed 15-days/wage period, whichever is less or the period of
notice, which the employer is required to give for the termination of that employment.

1. An advance of wages not already earned shall not, without the previous permission of the Inspector of Labour, exceed an amount equivalent to the wages earned by the employee during the preceding two calendar months, or if he/she has not been employed for that period, twice the wages he/she is likely to earn during the subsequent calendar month.

2. Any advance may be recovered in instalments by reduction of wages, spread over not more than twelve months.

3. In every establishment, all the inside walls and ceilings of rooms, all the staircases and passages should be lime-washed or colour-washed at intervals of not more than twelve months, and they shall be maintained in a clean state.

4. Th employer of every establishment shall adopt adequate precautions against danger by fire to the life of the persons employed by him.
